House of the Dragon Episode 8 “The Lord of the Tides,” which takes place six years after the most recent episode, is focused on the question of who will succeed the Sea Snake Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), who was reportedly gravely injured in the never-ending war in the Stepstones. the war over the Iron Throne is obvious when Vaemond Velaryon questioned Driftmark’s destiny in Rhaenyra Targaryen and Queen Alicent’s struggle.  The scenario served as a King Viserys’ (R.I.P.) farewell and Rhaenyra has been troubled by concerns regarding the origin of her children with Laenor Velaryon, but the recent episode set up an epic ending with charges from Laenor’s uncle  and her new husband Daemon Targaryen had the ultimate word. Who Is Vaemond Velaryon?

After the Targaryens, the Velaryons are arguably the second-most significant family in House of the Dragon. The Velaryons control the tides while the Targaryens sit on the Iron Throne. The Targaryens’ most trusted allies are the ancient House Velaryon, which has roots in Westeros dating back to the time of Old Valyria. They do, however, occasionally argue, as seen by the conflict between Lord Corlys and King Viserys I over the latter’s rejection of the latter’s daughter.

While Corlys Velaryon, the ruler of Driftmark, is referred to as the Sea Snake on the battlefield and in the sea, his younger brother Vaemond Velaryon (Wil Johnson) is a member of his council. However, when Corlys sustains a serious injury in combat, he has no real claim to the seat of Driftmark because he is the second child. The episode features him petitioning a claim to become the new lord of Driftmark despite the fact that he is aware that the only sons of Corlys’ successor Laenor who are known to exist may be bastards.

Queen Alicent and her father Otto Hightower, who has once more been appointed Hand of the King, engage in a power struggle as a result. In order to control the kingdoms as Viserys Targaryen wishes, Alicent and Otto have been strategically trying to remove Rhaenyra from the picture while Viserys Targaryen’s health is deteriorating and he is literally on his deathbed. Vaemond wants to cast doubt on Rhaenyra’s children’s legal parentage. He asserts that Rhaenyra’s sons have no legitimate claim to rule Driftmark and that his bloodline should remain as its legitimate rulers.

Is Vaemond Velaryon Dead in House of the Dragon?

The battle for the Iron Throne has become much clearer now that House of the Dragon has traveled even further back in time, as a result of Vaemond Velaryon’s involvement in the conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Queen Alicent. Furthermore, the most recent episode of the series built up an epic ending with the loudest allegations from Laenor’s own uncle and her new husband Daemon Targaryen got the last say. Rhaenyra has been troubled by doubts regarding the parentage of her children with Laenor Velaryon.  Ser Harwin Strong is supposed to have fathered Rhaenyra Targaryen’s sons. Though Ser Strong and his father, the Hand of the King, were killed in a not-so-mysterious arson in the previous episode, Westeros never ceased whispering about Rhaenyra’s children. The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros never ceased talking about Ser Strong’s Rhaenyra’s children, even after they were ultimately killed in a not-so-mysterious instance of arson in the previous episode. Ser Strong also served as the Hand of the King. And when one of them is chosen as the heir to Driftmark, a prominent member of House Velaryon feels left out.

Why Did Daemon Kill Vaemond?

Lucerys Velaryon is still supposed to claim the seat of Driftmark as was intended by the Sea Snake and Vaemond’s brother, Corlys Velaryon, according to Viserys, who unexpectedly makes an appearance at the petition to deny Vaemond his claim after a late-night plea from Rhaenyra to her father. This upends Alicent and Otto’s plans and shows a significant amount of support for Rhaenyra. Vaemond, of course, finds this to be unacceptable, but his subsequent actions are a little perplexing. Vaemond (Wil Johnson), one of the strongest voices in the room when it comes to the real parenthood of Rhaenyra’s three Velaryon boys, does not see the situation that way.

Vaemond tells the king that he cannot decide what will happen to his ancestral home as he accuses both of Rhaenyra’s children of being bastards in front of everyone right there in the court. Her offspring are idiots! Vaemond sneers at Rhaenyra, “And she is a whore. Viserys rises to speak up for his daughter. Viserys says, “I shall have your tongue for that.” But as soon as Viserys, in a painful decree, Daemon stands up for his wife’s dignity and slashes off Vaemond’s head.  After slaying Vaemond, Daemon proclaims like a true king, “He can control his tongue.” Aemond approaches Daemon with a proud nephew’s gaze. Rhaenys watches the maesters take care of Vaemond’s body after the incident with Driftmark.
