House of the Dragon Episode 9 Recap

Who is Rhaenys’s Dragon?

The tension that has been building for the past 30 years is finally released in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 9 when King Viserys’s passing and a serious misunderstanding allow the green council to steal the crown from Rhaenyra. The following day, Alicent visits Rhaenys and implores her to join their cause. Although Alicent presents a strong argument for forsaking Rhaenyra, even going so far as to assert that Rhaenys ought to have been queen, she is unable to grasp the bigger picture. Rhaenys sees that Alicent’s goals are merely to serve the men in her life to the best of her ability. Although Rhaenys respects Alicent, she says that in the prison the patriarchy has placed her in, Alicent is only trying to, at best, open a window for herself.

Rhaenys (Eve Best) interrupts the coronation by riding her dragon Meleys out of the Dragonpit. In full Targaryen warrior queen regalia. Following her release by Ser Erryk Cargyll, Rhaenys observes Aegon’s coronation in the Dragonpit. All of that, however, abruptly comes to an end when a dragon soars into the sept and begins destroying everyone in its path by slamming, stamping, chewing, and generally wrecking havoc. After all, it was one of her companions, Rhaenys, who stole the show by riding the dragon Meleys to Aegon’s coronation ceremony. One of the most intelligent characters in House of the Dragon, Rhaenys understands the importance of offering terms of surrender before any blood is shed.

Who is Rhaenys’ dragon Meleys

But who is Meleys, Rhaenys’ dragon, really? Meleys is older than many of the dragons circling Westeros at this time, though not as old as Vhagar. Alyssa Targaryen, the mother of Viserys and Daemon (Matt Smith), originally claimed Meleys. Rhaenys claimed Meleys a few years after Alyssa passed away. Meleys, a ruby red dragon known as “The Red Queen,” is so named. If you’re having problems identifying her apart from Caraxes, the red dragon owned by Daemon, keep in mind that Caraxes was given the nickname “Blood Wyrm” due to his long body and diminutive back legs.

Why Rhaenys Declines To Burn Meleys’ Greens?

The Queen Who Never Was insists they can’t leave her dragon Meleys behind even as Ser Erryk (Luke Tittensor) tries to use a boat to whisk Rhaenys away from King’s Landing. Alicent leaps in front of Aegon when Rhaenys and Meleys turn to face the greens on the platform out of concern that Rhaenys will burn them to death. Meleys screeches and opens her mouth, but Rhaenys’ expression shows that she had no intention of pronouncing the word “Dracarys.” Instead, Rhaenys successfully terrifies the greens, causes Meleys to change her mind, and then departs the city. Aegon, Alicent, Otto, Aemond, Criston, and Helaena could have been burned by Meleys to finish the conflict in a single blow, but Rhaenys spared them because it wasn’t her palace that shed the first blood. As of yet, no declaration of war has been made, and Rhaenyra is still ignorant of both Viserys’s passing and Aegon’s ascension to the throne. Rhaenys maintains her authority and says that although she had the option to immediately murder the greens, she chose mercy and a diplomatic opening to the Dance of the Dragons. A minor portion of Rhaenys’ decision to allow Alicent and her kids survive also has to do with the fact that following their chat in House of the Dragon episode 9, she now respects Alicent more. Rhaenys provides the greens a chance to submit while simultaneously allowing Rhaenyra be the one to launch war by refraining from murdering them in advance.
