Over the years, “The Simpsons” has been known for its original music, and has even had song-heavy episodes in the past, such as Season 8. When writer Elisabeth Kiernan Averick joined the cast of “The Simpsons” a few years ago, she knew she’d be asked to create a musical episode sooner or later. Marge puts on a revival of her high school musical, “Y2K: The Millennium Bug,” in Sunday’s Season 33 premiere, “Star of the Backstage.” Around seven songs are featured in the show, including one from the “Y2K” musical-within-a-musical. “Star of the Backstage” was one of the first episodes written during the early days of COVID-19 lockdown, and it was a difficult to produce this big episode remotely. Sarah Chase as Sasha Reed guest stars in the episode as a Springfield High alum who left for Broadway and returns home to reprise her “Y2K” part. Marge is made even more of an outcast by Chase’s character’s rapid reintegration into her former castmates.
