Who is Milena Grenfell-Baines?

Radcliffe family with Milena and Eva-

Milena Grenfell-Baines, born Milena Fleischmann in Czechoslovakia in 1929, was one of the 669 mostly Jewish children who were taken from Prague to safety on the Kindertransport trains, which were set up by Sir Nicholas Winton. In 1939, Milena came to London with her sister Eva, who was 3 years old. She was only 9 years old. The Radcliffes took care of them because Milena’s father Rudolf Fleischmann had already left Czechoslovakia and was too sick to do it himself. Milena didn’t leave the Radcliffes’ care until 1940 when her mother came from Norway to live with them.
The story of Milena’s trip shows how strong the human spirit can be in terrible situations. Her grandfather told her to be loyal to the country she was leaving, and that advice helped her make decisions throughout her life.  During the war, Milena went to the Czechoslovak State Boarding School in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales. She didn’t go back to Czechoslovakia after the war, and she went to school to become a nurse and learn how to care for babies.
Who is Milena Fleischmann s’ Husband?
Milena became more involved with charitable causes as she went through life. When she moved to Preston, Lancashire, she married the famous builder Sir George Grenfell-Baines in 1954. They raised four kids together: two from his first marriage and two they had together. When two accomplished people got together, they formed a partnership that went beyond their own goals and made a valuable contribution to society.  Milena gave money and time to many good causes, such as Friends of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Halle orchestras projects, Czech student exchanges in Preston for cooking jobs, and Holocaust education.

Where is Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines Now?

The title Lady Grenfell-Baines was given to her when her husband George was made a knight in 1978. Her husband passed away in 2003.  The journey that started in 1939 on a Kindertransport train has become a tapestry of experiences, strength, and kindness. Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines lives in Preston, which is near Manchester in northern England. She is very involved in cultural and social exchanges between the UK and the Czech Republic. She won the Gratias Agit Award from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1999.
When Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines thinks about the movie “One Life,” she gives a unique view of the man who changed her life. She talks about times she had a close connection with Nicholas Winton and stresses how warm, kind, and dedicated he was to helping others. Together they ate cauliflower cheese and rice pudding, and Milena remembers how exciting it was to be flown by Winton himself when he was 103 years old.
Through her own words, Milena tells the man who saved her life and many others how grateful she is. She stresses how important the movie is, not only as a story about history but also as an example of how one person can make a change. Milena says that the movie should be shown in schools to teach about the Holocaust and make young people more caring and compassionate.
