Doctor Strange 2: New Third-Eye Of Agamotto Explained

Yes, we know what you’re thinking: the Eye of Agamotto has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2016’s Doctor Strange, so why is it a part of something in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that requires further explanation? In the comics, the Eye of Agamotto refers to the palm-sized amulet Doctor Strange wears on his chest, but inside the amulet is the real Eye of Agamotto, the Stone Age’s Sorcerer Supreme from 1,000,000 BC. The Eye of Agamotto was the vessel that housed the Time Stone before Thanos destroyed it in the MCU.

So, if there is an Eye, where is it located? In the comics, the Eye has mystical characteristics and is used to find and show ‘truth,’ where it can radiate an all-revealing light, allow its owner specific mystical views into another’s soul, and a ‘third eye’ emerges on the user’s forehead when it is used, among other things.

So when Sinister Strange’s third eye appeared on his forehead, we concluded it represented evil and that its presence was caused by Sinister Strange opening and using the demonic Darkhold book. The ‘third eye’ emerges on Doctor Stephen Strange when he yells out in anguish at the end of the film. Yes, Doctor Stephen Strange opens and uses the Darkhold to dream walk across the multiverse, however, the Darkholds throughout the multiverse were apparently destroyed at the end of the film, so any magical side effects should be gone.

As a result, we believe the ‘third eye’ is the Eye of Agamotto. Could it be Sinister Strange’s Eye, which first latches on to Christine Palmer before latching on to Doctor Strange? Or is it possible that the Eye has always been present and has shown itself? And if the Eye is a truth-teller, it’s possible that’s why Doctor Strange was so eager to trust Clea when she claimed she was from the Dark Dimension, despite the fact that he still pursued her.
