EXTERRITORIAL on Netflix is a thrilling German action thriller that immerses viewers in a high-stakes mystery that revolves around secrets, survival and diplomacy. The movie, which was directed by Christian Zübert and co-written with Kerstin Schmidbauer, is about a woman named Sara (Jeanne Goursaud), who used to be an elite soldier and now has a quiet new life that turns into a crazy search for her missing son.
Sara’s fresh start in the U.S. is interrupted when her son, Joshua, vanishes without a trace during a routine visit to the U.S. consulate in Frankfurt. Denied help and even recognition that her son existed, Sara must rely on her military skills and instincts to uncover a potential conspiracy, with uncertain allies like the consulate’s head of security (played by Dougray Scott) and a mysterious woman named Irina (played by Lera Abova). With no official authority in the extraterritorial zone of the embassy—Sara is left to face danger alone. Now, We’ll now talk about where Exterritorial was filmed and how the crew made this international thriller come to life.
Exterritorial Filming Locations: Frankfurt and Vienna Sites Revealed
From August 2023 to the end of November 2023, work on Exterritorial was shut down. The movies were filmed in Germany and Austria, which gave the story a more realistic look and a more complex visual style.
FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY
A big part of the movie was shot in Frankfurt am Main, which is in the state of Hesse and is one of Germany’s biggest cities. Since a lot of the movie takes place in and around a U.S. consulate, the city was the main setting for the plot. The famous skyline of Frankfurt, which is often called “Mainhattan,” gave the movie a modern, urban feel.
The movie shows some well-known parts of the city—like the Frankfurt Central Station (Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof) and a number of outdoor scenes that helped set the mood for Sara’s search. These places were used to set up shots and scenes that show how the busy cityscape is different from the tense—confined space inside the consulate.
Frankfurt was chosen because it looks good in movies and because it is home to many global institutions and consulates, which makes the story seem more real.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Austria was an important part of the production because it provided unique buildings and spaces that were used as important filming locations. A lot of things were done in the old building of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Wirtschaftsuniversität)—which can be found at —Augasse 2/6, 1090 Vienna.
The striking geometric shape of the building was used to make the outside of the U.S. embassy in the movie. A big action scene where Sara climbs up a building was filmed right here, on the terrace and in the buildings nearby.
The inside of the U.S. consulate was copied from the inside of this building. It was where a lot of Sara’s tense interactions, the mystery, and scenes with a lot of action took place. The team even used the underground parking garage of the building for important scenes that needed a dark, closed space.
Vienna has a long and prestigious history of movies. The city had the perfect mix of grand and practical architecture to match the mood of the movie—with its modernist buildings and classical landmarks—like Schönbrunn Palace and the ‘Vienna State Oper’a’.
The makers of Exterritorial were able to give the movie a grounded, international feel by filming in Germany and Austria. The story of paranoia, urgency, and danger that drives Sara’s journey was built with the help of Frankfurt’s lively cities and Vienna’s grand institutional architecture.
