Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 23 Recap

Canute faces an internal struggle when faced with Thorfinn’s defiance. On the one hand, he believes Thorfinn should be punished for resisting King Canute, yet on the other hand, he manages to control his emotions by listening attentively without interrupting Thorfinn.

Thorfinn responded by declaring his willingness to step back if peace talks falter and fighting becomes necessary. While acknowledging Canute’s desire to create an ideal paradise for his majority, even if this means subservient minorities being subjected to his rule, Thorfinn found this scenario unacceptable and informed Canute of his intention of creating a society that catered to those living under Canute’s reign.

Canute is profoundly impressed with Thorfinn’s unyielding resolve and admits that this complex negotiation for peace was his first experience ever. Inspired by his conviction, Canute eventually leaves Thorfinn’s farm after having come to accept his position.

Later on, Canute took calculated risks when demilitarizing various parts of England. His efforts bore fruit as there was no major revolt against his leadership; Canute also kept his forces within reasonable proportions and upheld Thorfinn’s peaceful policies that fostered a more harmonious society.

Vinland Saga  Episode 2.23: Ending!

Thorfinn visits Arnheid’s grave a few days later and notices Einar  (Shunsuke Takeuchi) placing flowers upon it, unaware of Thorfinn standing nearby. As they talk further about exploring the mysterious region beyond the ocean, Einar suddenly asks his companion whether they plan on venturing further afield.

Thorfinn recalls his interactions with Arnheid (Mayumi Sako) before her passing and his difficulty finding words to encourage her. He understands her hardship and strives to create an environment in which his vision can shape people’s lives according to it.

Thorfinn believes his resolve to create a society more appealing than death can offer hope to those who have given up hope. He sees it as the fulfillment of an ambition he and others like him have long held, which they feel the world has long denied them. Suppose such a place doesn’t already exist. In that case, Thorfinn pledges to bring it into existence and seeks Einar’s assistance in building it – inspiring Einar to join him in building an oppressed-free society on the other side of the ocean.

Thorfinn and Einar have lofty aspirations to become prominent farmers and arrange a farewell meeting with Sverkel and the others before leaving Sverkel’s estate. Some individuals falsely inform Ketil (Hideaki Tezuka)  that Olmar persuaded Canute to return, while Pater assures Thorfinn and Einar that Arnheid’s grave will be well maintained during their absence. Olmar thanks Thorfinn’s hard work at the farm while simultaneously sharing his aspiration to become equally influential as Thorfinn one day.

Thorfinn and Einar express their appreciation to Sverkel for all his help over the years yet decline any monetary or silver offerings from Sverkel at their farewell table. Snake then revealed his real identity – that of Roald Grim, whom they thought they knew as Roald Grim – bringing joyous tears of laughter before saying their farewells and setting sail on their ship.
