The episode begins with Judy(Edi Patterson), who is the catalyst; she isn’t quite the neurotic monster she is now, but the seeds are planted early on. She has a crush on Trent, a kid at school, and she isn’t shy about showing it. Her behavior comes across as hostile and intimidating. In retaliation, Trent humiliates her in front of the whole school by cutting off her hair.
The patriarch of the Gemstone family Eli (John Goodman) and Aimee-Leigh take advantage of people’s fear during the Y2K catastrophe to sell Survival Buckets, raising millions of dollars for the church in the process. But when the truth is revealed, riots break out, and the Gemstone congregation realizes they were duped. Eli puts profits first, but Aimee-Leigh battles remorse.
Peter Montgomery (Steve Zahn), who formerly oversaw a little congregation, is currently in financial peril as a result of putting his life wealth in unsold Survival Buckets. Because of Eli’s influence, he mortgaged their home and thought the world was coming to an end. Amber (Cassidy Freeman) joins Jesse (Danny McBride), Kelvin (Adam DeVine) , and Judy in playing with their cousins like they would with any other family member.
The disappearance of Amber’s grandmother’s ring is revealed to Jesse, and Kelvin exposes Judy’s pattern of theft. When Jesse confronts Judy, she is sobbing. He defends her the following day by making fun of Trent. When Amber gives Judy the ring back, they get along again.
Eli addresses the demonstrators at Martin’s suggestion and claims he sincerely believed in the Y2K catastrophe. Although he persuades them that it’s a miracle it didn’t, the demonstrators do not receive the offer of payment. Eli’s pledge to Peter to purchase the Survival Buckets back falls through as well. When Peter’s strong wife May-May (Kristen Johnston) learns, she rejects Eli’s offer of payment.
In an effort to rob a bank in order to save his family from financial collapse, Peter is shot and ends up killing a security guard in self-defense. The episode closes with Peter still alive but in jail after lying in a pool of his own blood. As he becomes a militia leader, the narrator implies that incarceration may cause him to become a dangerous and unrecognizable person.
Overall, the episode plays a significant role in examining Judy’s personality and illuminating the reasons behind the dysfunction and corruption within the Gemstone family.
