The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8 Episode 1 Recap

With the start of the new season, Gizelle is in the spotlight. She’s decided to give love another go after her amorous activities with Sherman Douglas took a bad turn. Her previous plot of “rekindling” her love with Reverend Jamal Bryant may be forgotten, but there’s no doubting that her new romance with fellow Bravolebrity Jason from Winter House has drawn criticism. Though some people might find it uncomfortable, she’s giving him sushi in front of her child, which is a far cry from the controlling Lady Bryant we’ve seen in the past. Gizelle has made guest appearances on Ashley’s TikToks, so maybe this cross-franchise romance might infuse her life with some rhythm and some fresh air.

Ashley’s life is undergoing change in the interim. She is no longer fully divorced, even though she moved from the penthouse to a suburban home. She freely acknowledges that she still enjoys taking vacations with her estranged husband, Michael, and their children and is not in a rush to get a divorce. Ashley is happy living her life as a “kept woman,” but it’s unknown how this decision will impact her chances of finding love in the future.

Conversely, Gordon and Mia are coping with the fallout from being fired from their former franchise. Their lavish 10,000-square-foot home has been drastically reduced, and they now live in a tiny 1,500-square-foot condo in Bethesda. They are now dependent on their savings and Mia’s pay, which is a shift that Mia finds difficult to accept. The strain of Gordon’s fight for a buyout payout appears to have taken a toll on their marriage. It appears that Mia is starting to establish the framework for her escape plan, and it will be interesting to watch how she handles this.

The season’s main subject, which centers on Robyn and Juan, is alluded to in the first episode. While having drinks together, Karen, Wendy, and Candiace don’t really talk about each other’s life updates. Their focus is instead on Robyn’s responsibility for “hiding her truth” and how much of the previous season’s antics, such as the focus on Chris Bassett, were just a “projection and deflection” from her own personal problems. During a talk with her husband, Candiace struggles with the breakup of her friendship with Robyn, believing that she was used as a stand-in for Robyn’s personal issues. After everything they’ve been through, she wonders if their relationship can still be saved.

In a remarkably forthright approach, Robyn and Juan confront the accusations head-on to start the season. Juan acknowledges that he was “too nice” and “too friendly,” which led to mistakes in the hotel environment. Rather than verifying the receipts and texts for herself, Robyn opted to trust him. This episode features a poignant scene in which Charisse, Gizelle, and Ashley try to talk Robyn out of it. They spoke candidly about their prior experiences of keeping their relationships intact by acts of denial, even when they were aware that they were failing. Robyn, however, is unable to believe that her husband isn’t being supportive despite his mistakes and is adamant that she must protect their marriage.

The opening episode of this season establishes the tone for the investigation of interpersonal dynamics, particularly those between Robyn and Juan as they work through obstacles and mistakes. Watchers can anticipate a rollercoaster of emotions and gripping drama in the upcoming episodes as the ladies of Potomac face their own truths and the realities of their relationships.  The story will be continuing next week, and we will get to meet Nneka, the new housewife. Keep checking back for more exciting scenes and surprising turns in Season 8 of The Real Housewives of Potomac.
