The Neighborhood Season 4 Episode 1 Recap

Dave’s genealogy research found that he and Calvin are sixth cousins once removed, not merely neighbors. Calvin was compelled to accept his new reality after Dave’s ancestry search was authenticated by family elder Aunt Desiray ( Margaret Avery ).) she confirms that they’re cousins by blood. According to Desiray, a Black Butler impregnated a white Johnson in 19th century Tuscaloosa, Ala., and their love child was Calvin’s great-grandfather. But what Desiray didn’t tell Dave and Calvin was that Calvin’s great-grandfather was forced to give up his family’s land when banks made it hard for “certain individuals” to own land at the turn of the century.

As a result, the Johnsons inherited the property, and Dave has begun to feel bad about his relatives’ racism almost a century later. Despite Gemma’s assurances to Dave that his cousin will forgive him, Calvin is clearly upset. Gemma tried to reassure her husband that Calvin wouldn’t blame him for centuries-old atrocities. and Dave felt compelled to make amends to his cause. He also stated that Dave is a nice person, listing everything Dave has done for the town since he and his family moved here from Kalamazoo.
