The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Review

The Marvelous Mrs-

The fifth and final season of Amy Sherman-Palladino‘s Emmy-winning comedy-drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has aired. In this series, a woman shifts from being a devoted 1950s housewife to a successful stand-up comic overnight. This is the perfect time for it to end, and the final episodes offer a fitting tribute to a series that has been both hilarious and beautifully executed.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 3 Recap

Following an unexpected flash-forward sequence, the TV series returns to its regular timeline and resumes the day after Midge (played by Rachel Brosnahan) got stranded in a snowstorm that marked the end of Season 1. Due to her new policy of not having opening acts, she declined Tony Bennett’s gig and is currently lying in bed, feverish and filled with regret, while holding on to a frostbitten toe. Her agent, Susie (portrayed by Alex Borstein), exclaims, “Six months!” believing that Midge has only half a year left before she completely loses interest in comedy. Following Susie’s successful efforts to secure a position for Midge in the joke writing department of a famous talk show, Midge returns to the clubs.

Midge’s parents are the other great duo in her life. Abe (Tony Shalhoub) is upset for an entire episode because his magazine made a change to one of his articles. Rose (Marin Hinkle) continues to produce a grapefruit every morning for breakfast and will stop at nothing to earn her reputation as New York’s top matchmaker. They continue to play off each other with ease and wit; one particularly rousing scene occurs when they realize that the wedding of Zelda (Matilda Szydagis) means that she will no longer be their housekeeper. Milo Ventimiglia appeared in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season four as a guest star in one episode as a “Handsome Man” who spends a special afternoon with Midge. The second episode of season five will include Ventimiglia’s character getting a name for the first time. And his real name is Silvio.

What about Midge’s two major suitors? Their narrative was always intended to end this way, so while the resolution with Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) may be disappointing to those who cheered when they finally got it on last season, it was inevitable. Meanwhile, her ex-husband Joel (Michael Zegen) merits the complex growth arc.  Mei (Stephanie Hsu)‘s ex-boyfriend Joel was hit with a double whammy when she told him she was having an abortion and going to Chicago to pursue her ambition of becoming a doctor. Joel’s mom and dad are relentless in their pursuit of details about Mei and the baby from Midge. She is unable to tell them the whole story and instead tells them that Mei is currently trapped in China.
