The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 6: “The Price” Preview Joel Returns In Flashback

After a haunting string of episodes filled with loss, rage, and survival, THE LAST OF US Season 2 Episode 5 gave viewers something they’ve been craving: a moment with Joel. Though brief, his return in a dreamlike flashback left us with a single phrase—“Hey, kiddo”—and more questions than answers. With Episode 6, titled “THE PRICE” (directed by Neil Druckmann and written by Druckmann, Halley Gross, and Craig Mazin) on the horizon, tensions rise, the stakes climb, and the past threatens to unravel everything Ellie has fought for.

Let’s look ahead at what’s coming—and dive back into everything that happened in last week’s emotional whirlwind.

This emotional momentum will be picked up in the upcoming episode, which is scheduled to air on HBO on May 18, 2025. A preview released at the end of Episode 5 shows more moments between Joel and Ellie — some warm, others filled with tension. In one standout scene, Joel and Ellie walk cautiously through the woods with weapons in hand. “Remember what I taught you,” Joel says. As Ellie continues on her dangerous mission, that line makes me think about how important memories and having a mentor are.

Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, had not appeared onscreen since Episode 2, when Joel was killed by Abby. That brutal scene was a defining moment of the season. But co-showrunner Craig Mazin had previously reassured fans that Joel would still be an important part of Season 2. He wasn’t kidding — the flashback suggests we’ll see more of Joel and Ellie together in the remaining episodes.

Though there’s no official synopsis for Episode 6, the promo highlights that Ellie’s path will continue to grow darker. With Joel’s memory guiding her, and her relationship with Dina (Isabela Merced) evolving, the emotional stakes are rising. Ellie just got through a scary episode where she had a violent encounter with Nora (Natasha Mumba), who confirmed what Ellie had long thought: Joel had killed the only doctors who could make a cure.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 6 “The Price” Preview

Ellie’s actions in Episode 5 reveal how much she has changed. She had to deal with infected clickers in the basement of a hospital, where Cordyceps spores could spread through the air without being stopped. She followed Nora through a dangerous maze and, in a scary showdown at the end, proved that she was safe. All of this leads to a more serious moral moment.

At the same time, Dina was seriously injured by a Seraphite’s arrow, and Jesse (Young Mazino) arrived just in time to help Ellie and Dina escape a brutal ambush. The trio’s journey through Seattle is clearly not over — and as new factions clash, the threat level rises.

With Joel now appearing through flashbacks, his influence on Ellie’s decisions will likely shape the remainder of the season. The upcoming episode promises both emotional beats and intense action, reminding us that The Last of Us is not just a story of survival, but of memory, love, and loss.
