‘Secret Invasion’ Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

In the third episode of Secret Invasion, the tensions between humans led by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Skrulls led by Gravik escalate as they both try to uncover traitors within their ranks. Millions of Skrulls who have assumed human forms and are hiding out on Earth are discovered. Gravik and other members of the Skrull council have been posing as prominent leaders in the government and media. Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) intends to employ the British Royal Navy to attack a U.N. aircraft in order to start a war and exterminate humanity. He also plans to use bionic reengineering to give Skrulls abilities.

Fury is worried that his wife, Priscilla, a.k.a. Skrull agent Varra, has been acting strangely while he is away. He probes her over her interactions with Gravik. In a flashback, it is revealed that in 1998, Fury fell in love with the Skrull co-op Varra. Talos’s concealment of the existence of millions of Skrulls on Earth is the source of Fury’s mistrust. Fury feels concerned after hearing a call from Varra and looks into her phone.

Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) learns about Gravik’s scheme, in which he explains his intention to further alter Skrulls in order to produce “Super-Skrulls” endowed with numerous superpowers. Talos makes an effort to reason with Gravik, telling him that if the Skrull conspiracy is revealed, humans will band together to fight it. Talos resolves to alert the global government about the crisis after failing to persuade Gravik, eliminating the Skrulls’ element of surprise. Talos stabs Gravik in the hand during a heated exchange.

In order to stop the attack on the U.N. delegation, Fury asks Talos for assistance. They locate a renegade Skrull who is impersonating the High Command, but their cover is compromised. Talos kills the renegade Skrull, but he does not have the passcode to halt the launch. The passcode is given by G’iah, who enters Gravik’s research center when Talos contacts him. Fury and Talos momentarily save the day by avoiding the disaster, but the long-term repercussions are yet unknown.

G’iah, in the meantime, is challenged by Gravik, who views killing her as a priority after realizing the gravity of betraying Gravik. She is fatally shot by him. After leaving the Fury family, Varra calls one of Gravik’s men because he can feel the impact of Fury’s absence in a different region of the world. It’s not obvious from Varra’s conduct if she is loyal to Gravik or if she is trying to win his trust. The legitimacy of Fury is now in doubt, and it’s unclear how the next episodes will pan out in light of this discovery.
