New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 1 Recap

The Season 4 opener of New Amsterdam, “More Joy,” begins with a sex scene of all things, almost a celebratory one, just rewards everyone who has been waiting for Max and Helen to get nude and perform the no-pants-dance for the past few years. Everyone is looking forward to a new beginning in three weeks. Max is ecstatic. Iggy, who is now in charge of the entire psychiatry unit, offers the “first-day” speech to the team that will assist him in “healing souls,” all of whom are crammed into desks designed for children. Lauren offers a similar speech to the incoming ED residents, but she is a little less grandiose about it. She does, however, reveal that one of her new inmates, Leyla, is her girlfriend. Floyd’s situation doesn’t seem like a promising fresh start – he’s now working under Dr. Baptiste, the husband of the woman with whom he’s been having an extracurricular romance, and who now wants to give him advice on how to make it work with the woman he’s clearly pining for.

Max’s flashbacks about being in bed with Helen take on a different tone, with her stony-faced response to his passionate babble being that she should never have allowed him in. Max was standing in a burned-out husk of a room in the present day, being told that there were signs of accelerant, various sites of origin and that whoever ignited the fire was aware of the layout and avoided the surveillance cameras. Max, in flashback, urges Helen to take a day off when she tells him she wants to return home permanently, her recent trip back to England having apparently reawakened something inside her that she isn’t interested in packing back away. Lauren also starts damaging her own relationship by openly favoring Leyla, much to her chagrin and the chagrin of the other residents.

Dr. Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank), an exceptionally attractive and instantly fascinating deaf surgeon who is clearly overqualified for even a position like Helen’s, is the key applicant in the present-day material — is that Max needs to replace her. In the meantime, Iggy meets with an old pyromaniac patient who is currently incarcerated in the hopes of constructing a psychological profile of the hospital arsonist; she draws a series of improbable conclusions. Max tries to persuade Helen to consent to a long-distance relationship in another flashback with such believable, earnest desperation that both she and the audience are impressed by his efforts. Dr. Wilder, who is barely employed at the time, quickly begins to assume responsibility for the aftermath of the disaster. Floyd and Lyn even have a touching time together that makes their relationship appear plausible.

When we return to Iggy, things start to get crazy and out of hand. After all, it’s the show’s regular approach, which alternates between painfully honest and much too absurd to be believed. When Leyla confronts Lauren about her obvious favoritism, Lauren almost immediately deduces what’s wrong with her patient, a former basketball player called Brandon Dover, who came in with gout, was medicated, and then nearly died. Lauren, meantime, discovers that Brandon is dyslexic, which explains why he miscalculated his medicine dosage and gives Leyla a public scolding. Floyd switches from Bill Withers to Cam’Ron for his surgical music, which Dr. Baptiste quickly recognizes as him enjoying the improvement in his love life. Dr. Wilder cheerfully explains that, while she would love to work in New Amsterdam, she is unable to replace Helen and urges Max not to let her go. Dr. Wilder’s advice is bouncing around Helen’s head when she finally meets Max at their normal rendezvous on the hospital’s roof. What he needs, as the title of the episode suggests, is more joy. Helen is the source of that joy. So, rather than finding a substitute for her, he has found one for himself. He’ll accompany her to England.
