How long does The Book of Boba Fett take place after the events of The Mandalorian’s Second Season?

The Book of Boba Fett

Boba Fett, the bounty hunter, is finally taking center stage in a Star Wars endeavor, with the aptly-titled The Book of Boba Fett, more than 40 years after his first appearance in –   the Star Wars Holiday Special. Temuera Morrison, who played Boba’s ‘father’ Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequels, will reprise his role as Boba (Jango’s clone’s) in the Disney Plus series The Mandalorian. Ming-Na Wen, who played Boba Fett’s buddy Fennec Shand after he invaded Jabba’s palace and executed Bib Fortuna in The Mandalorian season two’s post-credits scene, will also be reprising her role from that episode.

The Book of Boba Fett will be “more like a [Star Wars] take on gangster flicks,” according to Wen, in contrast to The Mandalorian’s “space Western” atmosphere. Fett and his mercenary companion will be attempting to stake their claim on the region once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime network. But when does The Book of Boba Fett take place in the Star Wars continuity, and how long does it take place after the events of The Mandalorian’s second season? Continue reading to learn everything you need to know.

Despite the lack of storyline details for The Book of Boba Fett, the teaser material we’ve seen so far suggests that the series’ events take place immediately after The Mandalorian’s second season.

Boba Fett and Fennec Shand returned to the sandy plains of Tatooine in a post-credits sequence from The Mandalorian’s season two finale, ‘The Rescue,’ and discovered that Jabba’s old servant Bib Fortuna had inherited the slain criminal lord’s empire.

Boba killed Fortuna without hesitation before assuming Jabba’s former throne, while Fennec freed the Twi’lek woman bound to Bib’s throne.

The official trailer for the series, which debuted on November 1, 2021, teases that it will focus on the immediate aftermath of Fett and Shand’s activities, with the two meeting with Tatooine’s crime lords in an attempt to form an (uneasy?) alliance. Boba growls, “Jabba governed with fear — I plan to dominate with respect.”

In terms of chronology, The Book of Boba Fett, like its parent series The Mandalorian, takes place after the original Star Wars trilogy (aka A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) but before the sequel trilogy (aka The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker).

Both Disney Plus shows are set after the Empire has been defeated and the Rebel Alliance has established a new Republic – but certain Imperial remnants are still on the loose and spreading havoc.

When does The Mandalorian take place in the Star Wars saga?

The Book of Boba Fett might, however, be set in the immediate aftermath of Return of the Jedi and before the events of The Mandalorian’s second season, at least in part. Confused? Allow us to clarify…

Han Solo knocked Boba Fett into a Sarlacc Pit – a living pit with a voracious appetite – in Return of the Jedi, and he was assumed dead (by fans, and within the fictional universe of Star Wars).

In season two of The Mandalorian, he reappeared alive, but we still don’t know how Fett escaped the Sarlacc Pit or what he’s been up to since. However, it appears that this is going to change…

Temuera Morrison told Rotten Tomatoes, “We’re going to see his past and where h’s been after The Empire Strikes Back.” “Someone mentioned that he’s been stuck in this one area for a long time, and now is the time to check out his adventure and learn more about him.”

It’s unknown whether The Book of Boba Fett will merely have memories explaining Boba’s escape and how he lost his now-recovered armor, or whether it will include flashbacks detailing his escape and how he lost his now-recovered armor (which was salvaged by Jawas after his supposed death and briefly utilized by Cobb Vanth, as played by Timothy Olyphant in The Mandalorian).
