The 23-year-old Renton, Washington resident Alejandro J. Aguilera Rojas became caught in a web of lies and secrets that would finally end in tragedy. At first glance, Rojas seemed like a family man—he was married and had a child—but he was seeing Dioneth Lopez, 21, from San Pablo, California. Many sides to Rojas’s personality became clear when he had an affair with Lopez and kept this part of his life secret from his family.

What happened to Dioneth Lopez?

In February 2020, Dioneth Lopez, then 21 years old, went from California to Seattle to meet Alejandro J. Aguilera Rojas, the man she was seeing behind her back. They set out on a trip that took them to the area around Sequim, Washington, and then to the Olympic National Forest, where things turned dark and deadly.

Clallam County sheriff’s officers found Dioneth Lopez’s dead body off of a logging road in the Olympic National Forest on February 14, 2020. The exam done by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office showed that she died from multiple injuries caused by blunt and sharp force. Police found a broken and bloody tequila bottle, a box cutter, and a knife near her body, which painted a very sad picture of the crime scene.

Police were able to connect Lopez with Alejandro J. Aguilera Rojas thanks to security footage from a Sequim convenience store. This evidence, along with the fact that their cell phones could be tracked, led police back to Rojas’ house.  Later, Rojas admitted what he did, saying it was in self-defense because Lopez had threatened to hurt his wife and child.  Because Lopez tried to stab him with a knife, he hit her on the head with a tequila bottle to protect himself, according to him.  Surveillance video and phone records helped the investigation find out the disturbing details of their secret relationship.

Where is Alejandro Rojas Now?

After this sad story, Alejandro J. Aguilera Rojas had to deal with the court system for the effects of his actions. The charge against Rojas was second-degree murder with a dangerous weapon. He went to Clallam County Superior Court in December 2021 and pleaded guilty. The crime happened on federal land in the Olympic National Forest, so the state dropped its charges against Rojas. Instead, the federal government charged him with second-degree murder.

Rojas once again pleaded guilty to the federal charges, and the case went on. He got a long term of 200 months in federal prison on May 16, 2022, for killing Dioneth Lopez by beating her badly. U.S. District Judge Benjamin H. Settle stressed how bad the crime was by talking about how brutal it was. Alejandro J. Aguilera Rojas is currently spending his sentence in a federal prison. he will spend a long time in jail.
