Apple TV+ continues to present an interesting show with the new series BAD MONKEY, with Vince Vaughn. Andrew Yancy is an ex-cop who has been transferred to the department’s health and sanitation inspection unit; a role played by Vaughn who uncovers a severed human arm while at work. This gruesome discovery revives his interest in detective work as he looks for crime solving and to reclaim his previous position. However, is this story based on real-life events?
Apple TV+ Show Bad Monkey Plot
BAD MONKEY is an Apple TV+ series that blends comedy, suspense, and drama with the backdrop of South Florida, and the Bahamas. The movie’s main character is Andrew Yancy, a police detective of Monroe County, who is suspended from the service and works as an inspector of restaurants. His regular, uneventful days turn into the unusual military attorney’s day when a fisherman in the Gulf of Florida catches a human limb. The stupid Monroe County sheriff Sonny Summers offers Yancy to deliver the arm to Miami intending to leave the matter to the Dade County officials.
This strange find starts quite an unconventional series of events. Yancy partners with the passionate medical examiner Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) who at first cannot stand Yancy’s cocky demeanor but becomes interested in the case. Together they explore the investigation further, reveal hidden sinister motives, and come across lethal risks.
Michelle Monaghan is Yancy’s incidental girlfriend who seems to have a dark, perhaps criminal background that also forms part of the plot. At the same time, there is the protagonist of the island nation of Bahamas – Neville Stafford, a relaxed fisherman (Ronald Peet,) who also has his share of difficulties: his house has been sold, since his piece of land is being cleared to make place for a giant complex of a luxury hotel. For help he turns to the Dragon Queen – Jodie Turner-Smith, a British actress, who is still a local legend with supernatural powers. The series is filled with shocking moments, laughter, and some violence due to action, and the audience follows the development of many characters and conflicts.
Is Apple TV+ Show Bad Monkey Inspired by a True Story?
BAD MONKEY did not occur in real life or is it inspired by a true story. In fact, it is based on a 2013 book of the same title by Carl Hiaasen, a writer whose stories always contain a rather dark humor connected with the peculiarities of life in Florida. Wildlife, environmentalism, political fraud, and other unusual topics in Florida Hiaasen’s books are characterized by satirical components and the company of various creeps. BAD MONKEY is not an exception either, as it presents a purely work of fiction, however, based on the exotic ambiance of Florida, although does not reflect actual events that have occurred.
All the events and the characters presented in BAD MONKEY are entirely fictional, nonetheless the peculiar nature or the plot and the scale of the events hardly could have taken place in any other state but Florida. Based on this, many have asked if indeed such a strange story could have been real but it was just an invention meant for fun, and a joke.
This show stars Vince Vaughn’s character, Yancy, a real estate mogul deeply enmeshed in the company of some of the most interesting and outrageously South Florida characters such as a selfish surgeon, a vixen widow and the notorious monkey. All of these constitute a series that has a very interesting feel about it.
The makers of “BAD MONKEY” as well as the cast members of the show have expressed their joy about the show along with the factors that make the show different from the rest of the shows. In an interview, Vince Vaughn, headlining the movie as an executive producer also along with Andrew Yancy character, admitted that he like to incorporate humor into a swift murder mystery. He liked being a part of the creation of a show that enables joking around yet during the mystery solving it is serious and has a different tone from crime dramas.
Another cast member, Ronald Peet, who portrayed Neville Stafford, was especially excited to play a Bahamian after which he was a Bahamian himself. He felt pride to contribute to what he considers his culture, and that is the joy he does not often get. Peet also said how exciting it was on set with a real monkey as it made the show all the more eccentricity.
Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence discussed how ‘the opposite of ‘Scrubs,’ ‘BAD MONKEY’ is a show that combines melancholy with whimsy. He enjoyed the concept of a show like that based on some novel, for example Carl Hiaasen and creating a programme that is as tense as it is funny for the audience. I noticed that both the cast and crew do have the passion for this combination of genres, which they believe it will be appealing to the targeted demography.
To those who have read the book and for anyone out there looking for a new and exciting movie to watch, BAD MONKEY is not to be missed. Expect lots of fun, thrills and good times and since it is set in the Florida Keys, we shall also see Yancy tread through the dark alleys of crime and moral ambiguity.
