The story takes an interesting turn in the last seconds of Episode 1 as James debates whether to report Wesley and whether to keep him away from Duke, his cherished dog. As James considers the idea of putting Duke to death by severing him from the youngster who loves him, the stakes are extremely high emotionally.
But things get more complicated when it’s shown how devoted Wesley was to Duke, even without compensation. Wesley’s sacrifices are highlighted by the great-grandmother’s testimony, which also highlights the close relationship between the troubled young man and his sick dog.
Unexpectedly, Wesley turns to James for assistance, showing a weaker side to his hardened façade. The epitome of veterinarian care, James gives Duke an injection and gives him instructions on how to treat the dog.   James gives Wesley a chance to turn his life around in the last moments of the episode. James gives Wesley a feeling of purpose and accountability by including him in the day-to-day operations of the animal shed.
