It’s about to get strange once more. Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar’s new mystery drama follows a group of refugees coming by ship from Europe to New York around the turn of the century. What’s the plot of the 1899 Series?

The original series revolves around a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent from London to New York. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, are united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. When they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.

Who is cast in 1899 (Netflix)?

Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen, Rosalie Craig, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Fflyn Edwards, and Alexandre Willaume are among the international ensemble cast members in the multilingual drama. The trailer for 1899, in true Dark flair, simply teases what’s to follow, leaving a few crumbs to tempt viewers back for what appears to be an equally weird and captivating voyage. At the turn of the century, we’re on an immigrant steamer ship sailing from Europe to New York. Passengers from many walks of life and nationalities are on board, linked by the fact that “they’re all running away from something,” as one traveler put it. In what language will1899?

1899 will be multilingual, according to showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, with each actor speaking their native dialect. On Netflix, it will be presented in the same manner. Odar and Friese made it clear that the language issue is very important to them, and that they aim to portray every linguistic and cultural aspect as accurately as possible.

1899 Locations: Where Is ‘1899’ Filmed?

The official start of pre-production for the show was on November 24, 2020, with a week-long lens test shoot. The show was supposed to start filming on February 1, 2021, but that date was later moved back by three months. The first day of filming was May 3, 2021, outside of Berlin, Germany. The series was filmed at Studio Babelsberg and a new virtual production studio called Volume. Volume is run by bo Odar and Friese’s sister company Dark Bay. London, United Kingdom (Scotland), was also a place where 1899 was made. Baran bo Odar posted on Instagram that filming for the show was done in November 2021.

1899 is also a technological test. The first season of 1899 was shot in a virtual studio with cutting-edge LED-Volume technology, which creates virtual sets and locales using video game engine technology, allowing complex visual effects shots to be generated in-camera. Dark Bay, a virtual studio based on the Studio Babelsberg property outside of Berlin, is co-owned by Babelsberg and Friese, as well as Odar’s production firm Dark Ways, with Netflix financing. The virtual production stage was developed in collaboration with film tech companies Arri, Faber, and Framestore.
